Alternate Name Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program
Description

Provides free tax preparation and e-filing services by IRS-certified volunteers. In-person sites typically open early February until the filing deadline. Offers services for the rest of the year in Mt. Shasta by appointment.

Serves Siskiyou County residents who meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Low-to middle income
  • Self-employed
  • Individuals/Households with BASIC tax returns.

Helps qualifying individuals and households access the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit (CTC), and CalEITC. Helps obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) if needed.

One may also e-file taxes on their own for free (for current tax filing year only) at: www.myfreetaxes.org.

Eligibility Common tax situations that qualify for the free VITA program: -W-2 wages with or without employer sponsored healthcare -Social Security and/or Pension income -Self-Employment income (some limitations, must be a sole proprietorship) -Disability income -Interest/Dividend income -Student Loan interest -Healthcare documents -Call or email for more information on in scope returns

Volunteer Duties -Utilizes volunteers who want to give back to the community and are good with numbers and people -Volunteers are trained and get certified through the IRS on how to prepare tax returns
